The largest group of fresh water lakes on the planet are the Great Lakes.
They have a combined surface area of 60 million acres (94,710 square miles).
The Great Lakes hold 5,438 cubic miles of water, which is around 22% of
all the world's fresh water. The Great Lakes were formed about 10,000 years
ago at the end of our last ice age as the melting glaciers left their water
in the basins that they carved.
